\'Life of Pi\' to Open New York Film Festival

By STEPHANIE GOODMAN

Moviegoers got a peek at Ang Lee's next film, “Life of Pi,” earlier this summer when Fox took the unusual step of showing a full uncut scene before screenings of “Prometheus” and other films. But New York Film Festival audiences will be the first to see the director's full 3-D adaptation of the best-selling novel when the film opens the 50th edition of the event on Sept. 28, the Film Society of Lincoln Center announced on Monday. It will be the second Lee film to kick off the festival (after “The Ice Storm” in 1997).

The tale of an Indian teenager sharing a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger, “Life of Pi” won its author, Yann Martel, a Man Booker Prize in 2002. The adaptation stars a newcomer, Suraj Sharma, in the title role, and the cast includes Irrfan Khan, Tobey Maguire, Rafe Spall and Gerard Depardieu.

The New York Film Festival runs Sept. 28 to Oct. 14.
