MTV Sets Date for \'Jersey Shore\'

By BRIAN STELTER

To those who thought “Jersey Shore” would not or could not survive for three full years, MTV is proving otherwise. The network has set a premiere date for the sixth season of this much-mocked but also much-watched reality show and has ordered a second season of the spinoff “Snooki and JWoww,” which features these two “Jersey Shore” cast members living elsewhere in New Jersey.

The original “Shore” will return on Oct. 4 (in its usual Thursday night time slot) and is expected to wrap up in December, around the time the series had its start in 2009. MTV has not committed to a seventh season, raising the possibility that the sixth will be the last. Though its ratings have dropped (the fifth-season finale had about five million viewers, while some prior season finales had six to eight million), the franchise remains MTV's highest-rated reality show.
