American Ballet Theater Announces Apprentice Program

Developing young dancers will be a new focus at American Ballet Theater. The company has announced the creation of a program for six dancers to work as apprentice members of Ballet Theater's corps de ballet, Kevin McKenzie, the artistic director, said on Monday. The selected dancers will train under Kate Lydon, ABT Studio Company's artistic associate, and Clinton Luckett, ABT's Ballet master, for 10 weeks beginning in September and they will then advance to apprentice level with American Ballet Theater during the company's performances of “The Nutcracker” at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. According to the announcement, training will provide full immersion into the ballets in ABT's repertory, including tutorials in ballet story lines, history, style and mime. In addition, dancers will attend seminars in hair and make-up and company etiquette in preparation for entering the main company. The dancers will be selected first from am ong the students at the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School, second from among Summer Intensive students and by audition. Their apprenticeship will continue throughout ABT's performance season ending July 2013.
